Sandi Morais: Mrs. Dr. Sebi, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to share some of your wisdom and knowledge on herbs and spices with our readers.

Mrs. Dr. Sebi: Thank you for the opportunity.

Sandi Morais: First, could you to explain what is a native plant?

Mrs. Dr. Sebi: Native plants exist naturally. Native plants are grown wild on the planet, or exist on the planet naturally, as opposed to plants that have been hybridize, or plants that are in botanic gardens, or anybody’s garden.

Sandi Morais: Could you name some native herbs and spices that you would suggest for cooking.

Mrs. Dr. Sebi: One of my favorite spices that we use in Trinidad is Chandon Beni, also known in America as Culantro.Chandon Beni is a delicious spice to add to your stew or coconut rice for a great flavor, and it’s also good for the digestive system. In Trinidad we love spicy foods, so we cook with a lot of different peppers.Scotch Bonnet, Bird Pepper and Cheyenne pepper are some of the peppers we use in our meals. These peppers can spice up your food and also provides health benefits. Cheyenne pepper is good for blood circulation, and digestion.Thyme is good to flavor your coconut rice, soups and stews. However, it is important to use the fine leaf thyme, which is a native herb instead of the big leaf time.

Fennel and ginger, adds flavor to your food, and they are good for circulation and digestion. Dandelion is a blood purifier and is high iron, the leaves can be added to your salad to enjoy the health benefits.Mint, Sweet Basil, Chamomile, and Tulsi are great to make tea, to calm the nerves. Stinging Nettle can be added to soups for flavor, and the herb is high in iron. Sarsaparilla is great to flavor soups and stews and is good to reduce inflammation. Saffron and Pimento seeds are good spices for stews and rice.A wonderful spice to put in your tea, porridge or drinks is Clove.Sea Moss is also good to add to your smoothies and porridge because it has 92 minerals and our body contains 102.Sea Moss is nature’s whole foods, and help to improve bone cells.
