WOWderful Woman: Bernita Bradley

In the heart of Detroit, social entrepreneur Bernita Bradley is sparking change and inspiring communities with her unwavering dedication and innovative initiatives. Bernita, the founder of The Village and Engaged Detroit, has a mission that’s clear—she wants to bridge gaps and create environments where children and families are prioritized, heard, and inspired.

“The Village was inspired by the disconnect between communities and the organizations that claimed to serve them,” Bernita shares warmly. “Often, these institutions viewed parents and communities as incapable of knowing what’s best for them and their children.” In response, Bernita crafted a platform to turn this narrative on its head, fostering a space where voices that are often ignored could be amplified and valued.

Engaged Detroit was born out of a similar need for connectivity and support, especially as homeschooling became a more prevalent choice among parents. “Parents knew what they wanted; they just needed support to understand how, or lessons from those who had already navigated homeschooling,” Bernita explains. This initiative is more than just an educational resource—it’s a lifeline for parents stepping into the role of teacher for the first time.

Addressing one of the critical elements for successful outcomes in children’s lives, Bernita emphasizes, “Parents need to be seen as partners, not problems. When we speak up, we’re not troublemakers; we’re trouble resolvers.”

Bernita’s approach to homeschooling reflects a significant shift in perspective, “It’s about getting out of our own heads and thinking outside the box.” Engaged Detroit supports this transition by building a community of practice that guides parents through curriculum selection and understanding different educational models.

Bernita recounts a touching success story, “Seeing parents evolve from novices to facilitating homeschool sessions, or even becoming coaches themselves, is truly inspiring. It’s about parents fueling each other, and the children, they come to our hub, and after a few days, they feel at home.”

Her faith plays a pivotal role in her journey. “I know God has a plan for everyone’s life. My faith reminds me that I’m here to reach others, and in turn, I am also reached by others. This mutual exchange of inspiration and learning is fuel for my soul,” she reflects.

Bernita also underscores the critical role of faith communities in educational and community initiatives, “Faith communities owe it to society to be active participants in advocating for and creating better educational outcomes. We must step out of our comfort zones and fight for these outcomes.”

True partnership, according to Bernita, requires vulnerability, availability, and transparency. “You must be open to learning and changing. It’s about building authentic relationships where we can commune and collaborate effectively,” she advises.

As for the future, Bernita is optimistic yet cautious, “I never reveal plans until they are in motion and God has given the green light. The work will speak for itself.”
